The Balvenie is one of my favourite distilleries and therefore needs some reviews on my blog.
We will start off with a very good and interesting offering from them:
- The Balvenie Single Barrel 12yo First-Fill Ex-Bourbon casks (47.8%), cask no. 4647
The Balvenie Single Barrel First Fill has been aged in a first fill, ex-bourbon cask for at least 12 years. Almost all Scotch Whisky is matured in casks previously used by Bourbon distillers. When brought to Scotland and used for the very first time they are known as ‘First Fill’.
Medium impact nose, fruity notes (apple, melon), blossom notes (honey), spicy notes (hints of vanilla) in the end. A typical Balvenie nose.
Thick tears, full bodied. Nice smooth mouthfeel, fruity (banana, melon, pear) followed by little spicyness (vanilla) and oak. Some blossom notes (honey).
Nice long finish, starting with some spicy notes then some woody notes (tannines from the ok) followed by sweetness (honey, icing sugar).
Real good balance and nice consistency between nose and taste. Casks are there in the woody notes, the honey and fruity notes.
All very subtle but a real nice 12yo expression in my view for a great price (approx. 60 eur)!
Score = 90/100
